Democracy, transparency, efficiency. These are what Durham SU needs to achieve to become a union that works for students, but so far it has failed. I’m standing to be your Opportunities Officer, proposing these radical changes, to make that happen.
A democratic union: the democracy review is a good start, and now real reform is needed. Assembly is confusing and cuts people out of decisions. This needs to change; Assembly must be more inclusive and representative. Together, we can make the SU more accountable to us, the students.
A transparent union: there’s a massive lack of trust and understanding about what the SU does. I’ll always be open about the work I do on your behalf, by pushing for the release of meeting minutes and financial reports. An active student media is also crucial for transparency, so I’ll passionately lobby for funding to be restored to Palatinate. There can be no impression of secrecy; the SU must always be open about how it works.
An efficient union: societies are the most important way people engage with the SU, but it can be difficult. I’m currently the co-chair of one, and I know the hassle and bureaucracy involved. The relationship between the SU and societies needs to be more efficient. The Student Group Agreement should be scrapped, and replaced with a new alternative, drawn up in collaboration with students and approved by referendum.
Together, we can make the SU a more democratic, transparent, and efficient student body. It needs to be a union that works for you. I understand the problems, and the solutions that are needed. I hope you can lend me your vote.
