Manifesto

Hey, I’m Charlie and I’m running to be the next Undergraduate Academic Officer.

We are currently in a crisis situation where Covid-19 has damaged the quality of our university education. Many of us feel frustrated at the high price we are paying for services we can’t access and teaching quality that varies considerably between modules.

We desperately need more value for money in our degrees.

Firstly, this means returning to a pre-Covid situation as soon as possible when safe. Though successfully defeated, the university has already proposed keeping some courses and services online only. I want to give students the choice between online and in-person teaching, ensuring the University offers both.

Secondly, we need a general improvement in the quality of education provided. The university relies on its reputation to sell places, but there are basic facilities and resources still not integrated fully or offered at all. Some facilities, like Lecture Capture, have been successfully provided at other universities for years now

I propose:

  • Full training in Lecture Capture technology for all lecturers
  • Keeping a no-evidence extension policy to mitigate the lasting difficulties and stress of the pandemic
  • Pushing the university to scrap group summatives, or providing an easier complaints process against those not pulling their weight in group work
  • Ensuring the University removes the library booking system as soon as possible and returns to a walk-in system to open the library for everyone
  • Stricter deadlines for lecturers to hand back work
  • Keeping the university committed to creating accessible course content with scholarship that reflects the diversity of students and our educational interests

With these policies, and a pragmatic approach to whatever issues the new academic year brings, I aim to get us more value for money from our degrees.
