The Students’ Union Annual Awards will be the biggest and best they have ever been. Hosted at Ramside Hall, they will be a celebration of a years’ worth of activities, representation and changes for the student experience. Any students involved are welcome to attend and we look forward to seeing you there.

Represenation

The Students’ Union is the representative body of all Durham University students. It supports the university to deliver quality academic representation and offers advice to other representative bodies and individuals to excel in their representative roles.

 

Academic Representative of the Year
This award recognises the achievements of a course rep, department rep or faculty rep. They will have excelled in their role(s), having engaged with their students, led on key issues and created positive change within the university.

+ Effectively communicating with the students they represent and representing these views

 

Commitment to Improving the Student Experience
This award recognises a student who has made a positive contribution to university life across their time at Durham so far. They could come from Students’ Union committees, common room executives, nightline, student community action, representational groups (associations) or even an unsung hero.

+ Dedication to effecting change to enhance and improve the student experience
+ Effectively communicating with the students they represent and representing these views

Staff 

These awards recognise the staff that goes the extra mile to support students with their time at university – this could be by being an outstanding academic or by creating an atmosphere where every student can excel.

 

Outstanding Academic in Arts and Humanities
This award recognises an individual who has given exceptional support to students within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

+ High quality lectures/seminars/lab supervision and resources provided to students
+ Inspires students and promotes a passion for the area of study
+ Commitment to supporting students in their studies and academic progression

 

Outstanding Academic in Science   
This award recognises an individual who has given exceptional support to students within the Faculty of Science.

+ Commitment to supporting students in their studies and academic progression

 

Outstanding Academic in Social Science and Health 
This award recognises an individual who has given exceptional support to students within the Faculty of Social Science and Health.

+ Inspires students and promotes a passion for the area of study
+ Commitment to supporting students in their studies and academic progression

 

Outstanding Student Support   
This award recognises a non-academic individual member of staff through supporting students in any aspect of student life this could be a member of staff in your department, college staff or a staff member within the Students’ Union.

+ Care for students’ well-being and university experience
+ Enabling students to reach their full potential and look to the future

Student Groups 

As we celebrate the great work that students achieve throughout the year, we have 16 awards to honour the best of the best. Those who are eligible for Student Group awards include Societies, DUCK, Media Groups and Associations.

 

Best Student Group Event
This award recognises a group of students who have planned and delivered the most outstanding student event of the academic year.
+ Evidence of success (high participation & satisfaction) - efforts taken to encourage
+ Creative and innovative ideas
+ Dedication of the organisation team
+ Inclusive - accessible to all (including  financial and physical accessibility)

 

Outstanding Commitment to a Student Group  
This award recognises an individual or group of people who have throughout the academic year, committed themselves to creating an innovative and inclusive student group that has been proactive in engaging students and the wider community.

+ Have demonstrated dedication to the student group
+ Impact on the group
+ Organised and led quality activities

 

Most Improved Student Group
This award recognises a student group that may be a new group who has ran events and recruited lots of members in a short timeframe, or an existing group which has dramatically developed to deliver more for the members of their group. 

+ Built up a good-sized membership
+ Running a number of quality activities in line with the group’s objectives, with good attendance
+ Dedication of the executive committee

 

Student Group of the Year        
This award recognises the hard work and dedication of a group at Durham University that has helped create a vibrant and active community and made a difference a lasting positive impact on the university and the lives of its members.

+ High participation in a wide variety of activities and satisfaction from members

Community

We know that Durham has many great communities and it’s time to celebrate that. There’s a huge amount of work that students do from involving the local community, campaigning for change or contributing to media groups that tell our communities what is happening.

 

Involvement in the Community  
This award recognises the role of an individual or group of volunteers that has played a part in building relationships with our local community through leading projects, volunteering and/or fundraising.

+ Impact on the local communities, including students and residents of County Durham (Durham and Stockton-On-Tees),

Student Campaign of the Year  
This award recognises the student led campaign that has had the most positive impact on the local, national or international community.

This award recognises the effort of an individual or group that has improved and developed the standard of student media at Durham University. This can include groups from the Students’ Union or a college media group.

Colleges 

Colleges are a huge part of Durham University life and these awards are to celebrate those individuals or groups that make a difference in their college communities.
