If the UK is still in the European Union on 23 May, voters will be electing 73 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to represent the UK. MEPs are elected to represent 12 UK regions from ‘party lists’. This means that you vote once for a party, and then the number of candidates elected from that party will be proportionate to the share of the vote that that party receives. Voters in the North East will be electing three MEPs to represent the region.

To be able to vote in the elections on Thursday 23 May, you must be registered to vote before 7 May. Students who are UK citizens may vote in either the North East or their home region. If you are an EU citizen, you can vote in either the UK or your home EU country. You can find more information about the elections and how to register here.

In light of the ongoing Brexit process and debates about the UK’s future relationship with the EU, these European elections are more important than ever. The outcome will set the tone for these Brexit debates and influence key policy decisions in the UK and EU. It’s especially vital that we make sure the voice of young people and students are heard, so that we can shape the key decisions that will have a huge impact on the lives of young people and the future of UK Higher Education.

Your first step is to make sure you are registered by 7 May so that you can have your voice heard. We will also soon be holding a European Elections Hustings with representatives from various parties. Come along to meet candidates, ask questions, and decide who will get your vote.
