Start a Society

If you are interested in starting a new society you should contact the Student Group Coordinator through, to talk through your idea.

It's not as hard as you may think, plus you'll receive help from Union staff throughout the process and after as a ratified group.

You should consult the list of existing student groups here to see if a similar society already exists - we are unable to accept duplicate groups.

Application process

Applications to register new societies are accepted throughout the year using this form.

Before applying:

  • You should have determined the group's aims and objectives.
  • You should contact any similar existing groups to discuss whether there would be any conflicts or concerns.
  • You will need to have a president, treasurer and secretary.
  • You should seek out other interested students to demonstrate support for the group.

The application process follows this cycle:

  • The Engagement team will review applications and notify applicants that their application will or will not proceed to Societies Committee. This step may highlight immediate reasons why the application might be unable to progress, e.g. a similar group already exists or the proposed group contravenes Union or University rules or policies.
  • Societies Committee will review all applications in the soonest meeting following the application.
Applicants may be asked to attend a meeting of the committee to answer questions about their application.
  • The recommendations of Societies Committee will be taken to Assembly for approval. Applicants will be notified of the approval or rejection of the application.

Setting up a new association
