Durham University Belly Dancing Society’s

Give it a Go event

25th January 2017

A huge success!

With over 40 new faces showing up, including our new instructor for the society the wonderful Gillian Hutton, we were able to shimmy in style with one of the largest attendances the society has ever seen.

The class was an introduction to some of the classic belly dancing moves including shoulder rolls, shimmies, horizontal figures of eight and more, along with hip belts provided by the society to add a bit more emphasis to those hip taqs!

We normally teach as an open-level class and for our Give it a Go we started with these introductory moves in a fun and non-judgemental environment. And because belly dancing is creative-filled and expressive dance, we even spent the last twenty minutes of the lesson splitting the class into groups of six and letting them use the moves that they learned from the class to create their own interpretations and invent some new choreography to perform. Looking at some of the feedback from class, it appears that the majority of dancers loved to learning a new dance style and being able to have fun with it and experiment with new styles.

"We had attendance even from Queen’s campus!"

The event was both successful and great fun, and it has definitely shared the joy of our society to the wider community.

We hope that those who joined us have gone home excited to have learned a new dance, and that they will join us for our regular lessons throughout the year!
