We were delighted to see that our very own LGBT+ Association has been given the prestigious award of LGBT society of the year at this year’s NUS LGBT+ Awards! We’ve been constantly impressed by the commitment of their exec to running campaigns and welfare initiatives in order to improve the lives of their service users.

The association has worked closely with our other associations to develop and promote intersectional campaigns within the Durham community. One initiative was working with the Students with Disabilities Association to train college welfare officers and Team Durham to ensure that students outside of the association had a better understanding of the barriers and specific needs of their service users.

The Association have also been extremely active in shaping policy of the liberation campaigns within the National Union of Students. Following from work that the President of the association did to support Jo Gower, the Students’ Union’s Community Officer in pushing for changes in Team Durham’s policies, a policy to make university sport accessible to trans and intersex students was passed by LGBT+ Conference to call for these changes on a national level.  LGBT+a have also written and successfully passed policy regarding making changes to the structure of the NUS LGBT+ Committee and Trans Committees to ensure the representation of student carers.

On the campaigns side, the association ran an extensive LGBTQ+ history month celebration which featured events from Rainbow Quidditch, a Bake Off event and countless panel discussions covering important issues such as whitewashing of LGBT history and sexual education within schools regarding LGBT issues. The Association aim to provide a social environment too with weekly socials for all service users . To this end they run individual socials for students who self-identify into particular gender or sexual identities.

A representative from the Association said ‘This award really is testament to all the effort put into running the Association by our Executive Committee this year, and we are so grateful for this recognition of our hard work’.

Congratulations again and we look forward to continuing to work with you!
